Engineering design is a structured way of turning a need into a tested solution. It combines scientific knowledge with constraints, creativity, analysis and iteration.
A useful problem statement identifies who needs the solution, what must improve and what constraints exist. Vague goals create weak designs.
Requirements convert the problem into measurable targets such as cost, mass, strength, efficiency, speed, safety, reliability or environmental limits.
Engineers create multiple possible approaches rather than committing immediately to the first idea. Trade-offs can then be compared systematically.
Calculations, simulations and physical prototypes help estimate how each concept will perform. Models should be checked against measurements whenever practical.
Testing reveals failure modes and gaps between the design assumptions and reality. Engineers modify the design, test again and document what was learned.
Engineering design is rarely a straight line. It is an iterative cycle of defining, designing, testing, learning and improving.
